44 Reasons Your Throat Hurts When You Swallow

The unfortunate truth is that there are over 44 different medical conditions that could be causing your throat to hurt when you swallow. For example, you could just be experiencing an allergic reaction. An allergic reaction will normally also cause sneezing, a runny nose, and hives. It is the running noise that actually leads to your throat hurting when you swallow.

Some of the conditions that you could have because your throat hurts when you swallow include: strep throat, panic attack, viral pharyngitis, generalized anxiety disorder, tonsillitis, thyroid cancer, epiglottitis, heartburn/GERD, stroke, mumps, or rheumatoid arthritis.

Obviously, it is important to realize that some of these symptoms are serious and some of them are not. There is no reason to rush right to the doctor and fear the worst just because you’ve noticed yourself saying “my throat hurts when I swallow.” There are lots of things you can do at home to try and get rid of the pain in your throat. If you are interested in home remedies things such as a spoonful of honey, spicy food, pepper, salt water, and garlic have been known to really help with sore throats. My Throat Pain Getting More Serious?

If you decide to try home remedies and in a week’s time they do not appear to be helping, it is suggested that you try taking pain reliever and/or cold medication. Unfortunately, home remedies do not work for everyone. Your body may need a little extra bump from some real medication in order to kick whatever it is presently fighting.

The general rule of thumb is that if you have been taking the medication for three to five days, you should be noticing changes. You should be feeling better and your throat should be hurting less. If you have not noticed any changes and are not feeling any less pain, you should make a doctor’s appointment.

If the pain gets dramatically worse or becomes unbearable at any point in time, you should just make a doctor’s appointment instead of trying to self-medicate. Your doctor is going to be able to tell you exactly what is causing you to experience pain when you swallow. Your doctor will also be able to tell you what needs to be done in order to resolve the cause of the problem.

Most of the time it is as simple as a medication prescription; however, there may be times where it is a more serious condition and you end up needing some form of surgery. This is why it is extremely important that you visit a doctor if medication and home remedies do not resolve the issue. The last thing you want is for the issue to progress and cause damage that cannot be repaired. Remember, through it all, drink lots of water and get rest!
